STU III Annual Communication Arts Media Conference

Maggie Rodríguez and distinguished communications and arts professionals analyze how technology affects the media and arts Miami, March 2007.- Saint Thomas University announces its III Annual Communication Arts Media Conference, this year titled “Succeeding in Communications and Arts in a Changing Environment,” event that will take place on campus on Saturday, April 28, 2007 from 9 am to 1 pm. Maggie Rodriguez, News Anchor for WFOR CBS Ch 4 News has agreed to be the keynote for this event. She will be leading an amazing panel conformed by George McNeilly (Director of Communications for ESPN’s Nascar, IndyCar, Champ Car and NHRA multi-platform businesses); Tiffani Helberg (CBS Channel 4 Reporter); Gabrielle Fennmore (STU professor of Visual Arts); Sheryl Mizell (Radio Announcer and Host of Community Talk); and Williams Edwards, from Sprockets Music. Focusing on “Technology in the Media and Arts” this distinguished group of professionals will analyze how technical evolution has affected some areas of communications, including the arts. This year STU will also be announcing the establishment of the Institute of Communication, Entertainment and Media (ICEM) housed in the School of Leadership Studies. ICEM will have undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and entrepreneurial activities that emphasize leadership training in media professions. As part of the event, there will also be an Art Expo. Several plastic artists will be exhibiting their art pieces. This is the third year Saint Thomas offers this conference. Since its inception two years ago, the graduate program has held a spring media conference that has enjoyed high success. The first year was to announce the MA in Hispanic Media with a conference on “Hispanic Media: Regionalism versus Universalism, which is more valuable?” About 75 media professionals attended. Panelists included John Morales (NBC Universal), Javier Aparisi (BBC), Alexis Ortiz (Hispanica Magazine), Helen Aguirre-Ferre (Diario Las Americas), and Lita Haeger (Association of Bi-National Chambers of Commerce in Florida (ABiCC). In 2006 the topic was “Trends in Hispanic Media.” The event served also to announce another graduate specialization: Electronic Media Arts.
